Delta Police, Detains Vigilante Members Over Allege Extra Judicial Killing In Ughelli South

 

Police officers attached to Ughelli Area Command, recently detained members of Ovwor vigilante group of Nigeria, VGN, over an alleged extra judicial killing of a yet to be identified young man in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

 

 

It was learned that the vigilantes had chased the unarmed deceased and his friend over their refusal stop as led to the gunning down of one of them while the other escaped.

 

A source disclosed that the deceased and his friend were coming from an unknown destination as a result the vigilante members decided to stop them and they refused.

 

 

After the shooting, the remains of the young man was allegedly dumped by the river close to Effurun-Otor by the vigilante members.

 

Few days after the incident, relatives of the deceased went in search for him and his friend that escaped, related what transpired and the incident was reported at Ughelli Area Command.

 

The vigilante members were invited and after inquiry, they were detained for a week before they were released after intervention from some leaders of Ovwor community.

 

“One of the arrested members of the vigilante leader of the community, are, Mr Umolo, the chairman of vigilante and others whose names could not be ascertained as at the time of this report.

 

When contacted via phone call,the vigilante leader, Mr. Umolo who denied the allegations and said, nothing like that happened.

 

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright could not be contacted but a senior security source that confirmed the incident said that the arrested vigilante members were taken to Asaba for investigations

 

“They were taken to Asaba and their release was facilitated from here, the anonymous security source disclosed.
